The Gardens and Grounds of Herstmonceux Castle is a 300 acre estate including woodland, formal themed gardens and the stunning 15th century moated castle. Made from red brick, the castle is one of the earliest examples of a brick built building in England. As well as operating throughout spring and summer as a popular tourist attraction, Herstmonceux Castle also operates as an International Study Centre. It was formerley the home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory but is owned by Queen’s University, Canada.
The castle is supposedly haunted by a White Lady (according to Jones) that has been sighted swimming the moat or standing nearby, and/or a or Grey Lady (according to Brooks). A headless phantom drummer also walks the grounds.

Herstmonceux is a village in East Sussex, England.
The name ’’Herstmonceux’’ comes from Anglo-Saxon hyrst, "wooded hill", plus the name of the Monceux family who were lords of the manor here in the 12th century.
